Captain America’s Patriotic Pudding

Hi Everyone! 🙂

I hope you’re having a great day. Today we are going to nerd-out a little bit and talk about The Avengers. I love the Avengers’ movies. Marvel movies are the best, aren’t they? Do you have a favorite Avenger? Personally, I like Hawkeye, though my favorite character in all the Marvel movies is Loki. Anyways, with the new Captain America movie out now I wanted to create a dish in honor of Captain America. This stunning banana pudding is the perfect dish to add some nerdy flair to your 4th of July BBQ… or any summer time gathering really!

This pudding recipe comes from Paula Deen. It’s a classic, Southern-style banana pudding, and if you use ripe bananas it will taste that much better! The design for the fruit shield came from my nerdy brain. I hope you enjoy this simple summer time recipe and bring a smile to your family’s face when they see the Captain’s shield on their picnic table. Have a wonderful day everyone and keep on cooking!

Serves: 8 to 12

Ingredients:

  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup cornstarch
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 6 large egg yolks
  • 4 cups whole milk
  • 1 stick cold butter, cut into small bits
  • 4 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • About 50 vanilla wafers
  • 4 medium bananas, cut into 1/4-inch-thick slices

For Topping:

  • 1 small container blueberries
  • 1 small container strawberries

Instructions:

To make the pudding:

  1. In a medium bowl, whisk together both sugars, the cornstarch, and salt. Whisk in the egg yolks and 1/2 cup of the milk until thoroughly combined.
  2. Then in a large cooking pot, pour the remaining 3 1/2 cups milk into the pot and bring to a boil over medium-high heat. Whisking constantly, pour the hot milk into the egg mixture and mix well.
  3. Then pour everything back into the cooking pot continue whisking over medium heat for about 5 minutes. You’ll notice the pudding begin to thicken!
  4.  Add the vanilla and butter and whisk well until thoroughly combined.
  5. Grab a large circular platter and spread out the vanilla wafers out all over the platter. Then place banana slices on top of the vanilla wafers. Finally, pour the pudding all over the platter, using a rubber tipped spatula to smooth everything out. Chill for at least 4 hours.
  6. After 4 hours, place a star shaped cookie cutter lightly in the middle of the platter and make a ring around the star. Fill in the circle with blueberries. Next, slice all of your strawberries into thin slices and make 2 rings: one around the perimeter of the dish, and the other around the ring of blueberries. Chill until you’re ready to serve and enjoy! 🙂
