Recipe Review: Rice And Dine’s Spicy Pan de Sal
Have you ever had a recipe tug at the back of your mind? You read it somewhere once, or maybe you saw it in a picture. Perhaps you tasted it in a restaurant and ever since then every time you think of what you want to eat, that heavenly vision comes to the forefront of your mind. That was me with Rice And Dine’s Spicy Pan de Sal. I love breakfast sandwiches. When I wake up, most days I’m not very hungry. I’m also notorious for doing 1000 things early in the morning, so an easy breakfast sandwich in my hand is perfect for my schedule. Thankfully, Rice And Dine came to my rescue.
I love reading John and Cris Anne’s blog. They are always posting wonderful recipes with gorgeous photos. Based in the Philippines, I was especially interested in her writing about what common Filipino street food is, and what a typical breakfast looks like. Which is probably why I was blinking, (mouth agape), and read that Starbucks in the Philippines serves spam pan de sal sandwiches! I am so jealous! While I can’t get that here at my local Starbucks, (just an egg, bacon, and Gouda sandwich here), I can cook it up in my little kitchen! And I am so glad that I did.
This simple Filipino sandwich has 3 main components: fried spam, pan de sal, and spicy cheese. There is a spicy vegan cheese that would work well, but I didn’t have any on hand. So, I modified this recipe slightly and put fried spam, fresh pan de sal, mayonnaise, and a couple dashes of Tabasco on my sandwich. It certainly wakes up the senses first thing in the morning! 🙂 But all in all, this little sandwich is a great go-to on a busy morning. My family adored it just as much as I did, and I have no doubt we’ll be making it again and again.
